Smart, convenient recycling bin options

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Globally and increasingly recently there is a widespread awareness and movement towards recycling and reusing the resources we use and consume. But no initiative is more commonplace especially amongst councils and governments than recycling for the home and businesses.

Many councils have a recycling scheme that is usually collected fortnightly, although it will vary from council to council as to the level of coverage of each scheme. Some councils for example will only recycle glass, paper, cardboard or plastic and not have a comprehensive recycling scheme, but industry experts suggest it is only a matter of time until the vast majority of the world will have a comprehensive recycling campaign across all councils.

Waste recycling is particularly beneficial to the environment. Perhaps the biggest environmental benefit is the dramatic reduction of waste that is dumped in landfill sites and the correct use of home recycling bins can be a part of this fight. Recycling waste will encourage the conservation of natural resources such as oil and gas for a lot longer, and increasingly leads to cost savings in the production of new products and packaging.

Many councils supply a standard recycling box, but there are now various home recycling bins on the market and the consumer encouragingly has a wide choice now in recycling bins to fit the pocket and style of every household.

Home recycling bins are specifically designed for storing and containing each waste material. These recycling boxes will often come in different colours making it easier and more recognisable to distinguish between each type of waste recycling. Getting everyone involved in this process especially the children is a great way to learn about and the importance of sustainability, conservation and recycling at an early age.

Many of the modern recycling boxes and bins now have multi-compartmental spaces, which is ideal for separating each of the recycling materials. All packaging now displays a recycling symbol or will indicate whether or not the material and product itself can or cannot be recycled. A good idea is to locate any recycling boxes and bins next to the trash receptacle as an easy and convenient place when disposing of waste.

Involve your children in recycling; recycling bins for youngsters

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

It is important to involve your children in recycling at an early age.

Remember, habits that they form now will stay with them the rest of their lives.

Children may not understand the importance of cleaning or replacing air filters on your air conditioner unit but they can easily understand the importance of turning off unneeded lights, unplugging appliances when not in use, and purchasing energy-efficient light bulbs.

Explain to your children in an age-appropriate manner what conserving energy means and then have them help you to think up ways to achieve it. You may be surprised at how enthusiastic they are. A 6-year-old may have a great conservation idea you’ve not yet even thought of. If your children are involved with the brainstorming and planning, they will be more apt to be eager participants in the ongoing efforts.

You can even get the children their own recycling bins. Stackable recycling bins like the ones we recently reviewed are great choices:

Children can stack their own colorful bins, and they love the feeling that they are really part of the process.

The Importance of Plastic Recycling and the right Recycling Bin

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Recycling plastics is one of the most important parts of the recycling program. Recycling plastics reduces the amount of energy and natural resources (such as water, petroleum and natural) needed to create virgin plastic. According to the American Plastics Council, the production of plastics accounts for 4 percent of U.S. energy consumption, and 70 percent of plastics in the United States are made from domestic natural gas.

Recycling plastic products also keeps them out of landfills and allows the plastics to be reused in manufacturing new products. Recycling one ton of plastic saves 7.4 cubic yards of landfill space.  Recycling plastics has never been easier. Today, 80 percent of Americans have easy access to a plastics recycling program, whether they participate in a municipal curbside program or live near a drop-off site.

Make sure you have the right recycling bins for recycling plastic. Some great choices are below:

The economic benefits of recycling

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

When you think of the many benefits of recycling, you’re first thoughts probably turn to the environmental benefits. Believe it or not, however, recycling has many economic benefits as well.

  • The more people that recycle and the more that is recycled, the cheaper it gets.
  • Recycling can help you save money, especially if you live in a community that has a pay-as-you through program implemented.
  • Recycling programs can save the community money because there are more options to make the program more cost-effective, such as recycling rates, implementing pay-as-you-throw programs, and waste management contracts.
  • More jobs are created and gross annual sales can increase by implementing a good recycling program.
  • Companies can save money through voluntary recycling programs.

How to Start Recycling

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Use these tips when deciding how to first introduce recycling to your family and household.

1. Find Out Where Your Recycling Center Is and What It Accepts

Check with your local collection center, and find out what it accepts and rejects. Recycling can be different in different areas. Residents in some areas face fines for not recycling.

2. Analyze Your Trash Situation and What Kind of Bins You’ll Need

What you use most will determine the type and size of the containers you’ll require. If your family drinks a lot of juices and soda, you’ll want a larger bin for cans and bottles.

Check out this post on The Right Recycling Bin

3. Create Convenience

Ideally, your home recycling center will be a two-part system one part for everyday disposal and the other for storing. The everyday part should be where you generate the most waste―for many, the kitchen. The spot should be as accessible as the trash can, perhaps right next to it. If you are short on space, consider hanging sturdy shopping bags on the inside of a pantry door. Sorting is a tiresome truth of recycling, so why do it twice? Get a divided container that lets you separate as you dispose.

4. Choose a Storage Space

When your kitchen bins fill up, move their contents to a storage spot until it’s time to drop off at the curb or a center. Consider the garage, laundry room, or utility closet. Containers should be easy to transport, so look for ones with wheels. If your community has return deposits on cans and bottles, separate them, too, for returns.

5. Post Recycling Rules for the Family

Learn how you should recycle phone books, metals, makeup, mirrors, and more. It’s a good reminder for your family, and the quick reference makes recycling easier. Use a Magic Marker to write what goes where.

Recycling newspapers

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Because it is collected in most curbside recycling programs, recycling newspapers can be an easy step towards improving your recycling habits.

In addition to being easy to recycle, newspaper can be reused in a number of ways around your home or office:

  • Newspaper is effective at removing odors. Crumple black and white newsprint in your old gym shoes, plastic containers or suitcases to remove stale odors.
  • Use crumpled newsprint to help your shoes, hats and purses retain their shape in storage.
  • Use newsprint to wrap fragile items for storage, such as ornaments. It can also be used to cover plants in the winter to help resist frost.
  • Use newsprint when cleaning windows and mirrors for a lint-free shine. It is also a useful barrier between art projects, crafts, shoe or silver polishing, and your counter or table.
  • Newspaper can be used as a reflective device when taking photos to help highlight or fill the light around a subject.  You can also let wet prints dry on newspaper when working in the darkroom.
  • Use comics and ads as colorful gift-wrap. Make sure to recycle it once the gift is opened!

Be sure to remove any rubber bands or plastic bags before you place your paper in the recycling bin.
